Five Tips for Link Building Success in 2013

2012 was a year of changes in the world of SEO. Google came out with several algorithm updates that basically rocked the whole search engine system. With updates such as Panda and Penguin, the once easy way of getting a site ranked at the top of Google became a tough game of chess, where highly refined strategies and not short-lived tactics are the winning elements.

In 2013, with the rumors of Google launching a Penguin 2.0 update in our midst, it becomes quite critical to design and implement a link building strategy that won’t hurt your website’s search standing should this rumor inevitably come to pass. I say inevitably simply because it seems real enough that Matt Cutts and his team would follow up on their previous algo updates with a few more just to lock down their new rankings system and to mess with our minds a little bit more. Well, let’s show those nerds from Google a thing or two by coming up with a strategy that is at least two or three steps ahead of them.

Here are several link building rules and tips to keep in mind for your 2013 link building program:

Improve Your Social SEO

Social Media and SEO used to be considered two separate things. SEO helped people find you on search. Social Media helped you better engage them. SEO purists believed that one had no real impact on the other. This is no longer the case.

Social networking now influences search results to a fairly significant extent. It draws traffic to a website and the more traffic it brings, the bigger the impact on the website’s search rank. But the topic of this article looks at another aspect of this dynamic relationship between SEO and Social Media – the fact that people are now using the search function of their preferred Social Networks to find a business.

In the following article I provide a few tips on how to optimize your online businesses presence for Social Media search:

How To Find Who Is Linking To Your Website – Accurate and Free Backlinks Checker

Over the past few years, my website has ranked pretty high in for some great keywords but, I’ve noticed recently, my search engine ranks have started slipping. My theory for this occurrence is my articles and posts from a few years ago were seen as out-dated and no longer counted (although I could be wrong on this).

To counter this, I started building links through forum posts, articles, guest blogging and video posting. Keen to see if my efforts were paying off, I tried to figure out if my backlink count was increasing. My first stop was Google, where I used the [] command and found a very disappointing result – only 23 backlinks.

“Are you kidding me?” I thought.

Debunking Three Social Marketing Myths

Social media marketing is important; enough has been said on the matter. Executing that marketing, however, is a more nuanced affair. It isn’t simply a matter of “doing it” – there has to be a clear goal in mind with an overarching ethos and objectives that align with that.

It might sound haughty, especially compared to actual real-life social interaction. But compare “making friends” with “business networking.” One is done casually and on a whim, the other is far more determined and precise.

The problem is, despite the social nature of social media marketing, too many approaches are just about making friends. Let’s address that misconception.

18 SEO Killers You Must Clean Up and Avoid for 2013

There’s a lot of talk lately of Google having finally killed SEO through their Panda and Penguin algorithms, which continue to ensnare more and more websites with every new update.

So is SEO Really (Finally) Dead?

When you look at some of the Google organic traffic losses that companies have faced since the very first Panda algo (aka Google Farmer) hit in February 2011, you might certainly think so.

Analytics data showing losses of over 50% of Google organic traffic is not uncommon for afflicted websites:

And traffic that used to increase over time, suddenly took a huge dip:

See Visitors Overview chart

These patterns certainly make it look as if SEO could be dead.

Search Engine Poisoning – What You Need to Know

Ever heard of “search engine poisoning”? Yeah, the term was new to me too, but once I discovered what it meant, I became seriously disturbed.

In a nutshell, search engine poisoning (SEP) occurs when spammers and hackers rank websites in the search results to steer users to malware. Many of these malicious redirects point searchers to spam and viruses, but some are even more dangerous than that.

More and more, spammers are using SEP in an attempt to gain sensitive credit card info from unwitting consumers. This is a particularly vicious form of black hat SEO – the very worst kind, in fact. Some of these spammers rank rouge websites in Google or Bing listings, and once users land on the page, fake antivirus software is used to extract credit card info.

Stock Photos, Custom Photos, or a Blend of Both?

Over the past few years, the stock photography market has exploded and expanded exponentially. Iconic stock giants such as Getty Images, Corbis (privately owned by Bill Gates), Alamy, and Jupitermedia, Inc. (parent company of Jupiter Images) dominate high end publications and websites. Unfortunately, most of the images available from the companies listed above are simply too expensive for most small businesses to purchase for their web use, advertising campaigns, and media related ventures. Many times you’ll see images owned by these companies used in highly publicized magazines and websites such as Time, Sports Illustrated, CNN, and many others. So, how do small businesses locate quality stock images that they can use effectively to promote their business and/or products?

12 Traits of Successful Landing Page Design

There are landing pages and then there are landing pages – some succeed, some don’t. What differentiates yours from the ones that don’t? It’s simple – your landing page is meant for your visitor, who is your potential buyer. 12 Ways to Improve SEO and Traffic Through Video Marketing

Video marketing is one of the fastest ways to get top listings in the search engines for your keywords. YouTube, DailyMotion, and Metacafe videos seem to shoot to the top of the SERPS. Often the thumbnails are conspicuously displayed directly in the natural search listings which seem to jump out at searchers pushing viewers to click.

Many times relevant YouTube videos will outrank your main website for your keywords because YouTube has such authority in search. If you are ignoring video marketing you are ignoring a major traffic source for your website.

Here are some tips to maximize both the SEO and traffic potential of your website through video marketing:

5 Essentials for a Mobile-Friendly Website

“Come 2014, there will be at least one billion mobile payment users around the world.” These are the findings of a study undertaken by IE Market research. Given these stratospheric statistics, it is safe to say that at least some of your current website users are visiting on their mobile phones. Subject them to the torturous navigation of a desktop version using their iPhones or Androids and you can be certain of one thing – they will leave. And never come back.

The world of technology is rapidly evolving, so much so that what was relevant yesterday is often obsolete today. It therefore pays to be as informed (and flexible) as possible when developing your site. Here we’ll look at some absolute essentials that need to be implemented on-site to ensure that your mobile visitors don’t head out the door immediately after arriving.

Here are 5 keyword research tips for new websites to help ensure they get off on the right foot.

How to Make Your Digital Marketing Strategy Easy to Manage

Of the many benefits of an open source content-managed website platform, like Joomla, easily the most obvious - and powerful - is that it takes the power out of your agency's hands, and puts it back into yours.
Simply put, this is because the ease-of-use of a CMS platform means that you are no longer tied to your agency's whim when it comes to making changes. Now, you can make the changes yourself.

The greatest advantage of being able to do it all yourself, is quite obviously the reduced external vendor cost. Equally as important though (and hugely important for search engine indexing and optimisation), is that you are quickly able to add fresh content, keeping your site relevant and exciting - extending your potential digital marketing reach.

So what goes into a great CMS website, and how can it make your digital marketing efforts easier to manage - and help you return better results?

What Are Low-Quality Pages and How Do You Fix Them?

In some of my recent reviews of websites that have recently lost Google traffic, I’ve found a common thread: lots of low-quality content pages. But the interesting thing is that this wasn’t the sort of low-quality content created by some scammy SEO in an attempt to boost search engine rankings. This was low-quality content that was naturally created with no thought of the search engines.

What could be the matter with that?

Before the days of Google’s Panda filters, most likely, nothing. But when Google let their Panda out of the zoo, some pages on some websites that were previously ignored, started to cause rankings and traffic problems for the overall website.

What might low-quality content pages contain?
